A Good Self Defense Rifle for $500

Hi,anyone that needs a rifle should check out www.thecmp.org They have M1 Garands and M1 Carbines starting at $500.It's easier than years ago as the rules have been loosened up in my opinion. If your are a veteran you no longer have to shoot a match to qualify. They also have ammunition.Once you qualify then can legally send the rifles to your home. The Garands might be 50 years old but they are good shooters.Regards,Mike

Isn't "self-defense rifle" an oxymoron?

I've no issues with rifles, but they are offensive weapons - and yes, I understand sometimes the best defense is a good offense.

But true "self-defense" firearms are shotguns, and in many scenarios, pistols/revolvers.

That post reminded me if the OP is looking for a good deal on a rifle, I hear the French still have a lot of surplus rifles from WW2, never fired, dropped once.

The Appleseed Project is another really cool way to score an M1.

Saiga 7.62 ($300) + 1000rds of ammo ($200) = $500

They sure are great but put ten guys with garands up against ten guys with AKs with 30rd magazines and way more ammo, and it wouldn't be much of a fight.

Why would the AK guys need all the extra ammo?

LOL at the jokes about the French. Here's the last conflict they fled.

I was thinking about relative accuracy and range of both rifles.

Thank you OP, I am considering getting one of these rifles. I almost think I should sell my M1A, and get two of them.

I've no intent to knock anyone for their choice of say an AK style over the M1 Garand, but this thread isn't about AK's. AK's do have their place, not in my gun safe, but, they are an alternative. That I also own an M1A is also proof in how much I trust the M1 Garand. Ammo from the CMP for .30-06 is more available and reliable (presently) than it is for the M1A from any source known to me for the price.

Up until I had actually shot an M1 I had no idea how accurate they were. I was trained, of course, on the M16, but just found the M1, (a bit of history), to be a very reasonable MBR for me to own.

I was not meaning to bash your choice either.... obviously the Garand is a quality weapon. But here are the reasons for my above post:

1. 99.9% of people out there aren't going to be accurate enough to need anything more than 7.62x39
2. My cousin's springfield M1A broke after about 100 rounds and had to be sent back to the manufacturer to be fixed
3. AKs are popular in remote areas with harsh conditions and with people who aren't trained soldiers beacuse they do well in those conditions

Yes I am biased, but I do like the philosophy of being able to put a LOT of fire downrange, as well as being able to buy very cheap ammo.

Anyways, don't mean to threadjack this one, sorry.

What other rifles fire the 7.62 round???

There is plentiful ammo and I want to have at least one more.

TA-- pick up a couple of SKS rifles, they use the same 7.62x39 round. They have a 10 round internal magazine which you load with stripper clips. Don't bother with the collectible ones, just find ones in good condition.

They are the predecessor to the AK, and are very reliable. They are still really cheap, and are all military surplus. Yugoslavian, Chinese, and Russian seem to be the most common ones and they're all good guns.

You will find some really good deals on them in the "shotgun news" magazine. There are also spare parts and mods galore.

I like shooting mine, it is a very rugged gun.
